Planting plans for your borders, anywhere in the UK

Tell me about your border and I'll design the planting: what to grow, where each plant goes and how many you need, chosen for your soil and light. I'm a horticulturist trained at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, and I can draw a planting plan for gardens anywhere in the UK from your photos and measurements.

    What you get

A planting layoutWhere each plant goes in the bed or border, drawn to the measurements you send.
A plant listEvery plant by its botanical name, with how many of each, so a nursery can supply exactly what's on the plan.
Plants that suit the spotChosen for your soil, how much sun the area gets and how exposed it is, so they establish and thrive.
Planting and care notesHow to prepare the ground, when to plant, and the simple care each plant needs through the year.

    What I'll need from you

Good plans start with good information. If you're not sure about any of this, send what you can and I'll ask.

MeasurementsThe length and depth of the area, plus anything fixed in it: paths, trees, drains or a shed.
PhotosOf the area and its surroundings, ideally taken at a couple of times of day.
Which way it facesA compass app on your phone, standing with your back to the house, tells you which way the garden faces.
Your soilWhether it's heavy clay, sandy or somewhere in between; a squeeze test is enough. A cheap pH kit from a garden centre tells me if it's acid or alkaline.
What you'd likeColours you love or hate, how much time you want to spend on it, and anything it has to be: pet-safe, low-maintenance or good for wildlife.

    Prefer a visit?

If you're in County Durham or nearby, I can see the space for myself on a garden consultation first, and we can talk through the planting together before I draw it up.

    Price

I price each planting plan when you get in touch, based on the size of the area and how many beds it covers, so you know the cost before you commit.

I also offer garden consultations, garden design, wildlife gardens, veg and allotment coaching, native hedge planting, workshops and talks and gift vouchers, and you can read more about my background.

    Planting plans questions

Can you do a planting plan if you can't visit?

Yes. Planting plans are designed from the measurements, photos and soil details you send, so I can draw one for a garden anywhere in the UK. In County Durham I can also visit first if you'd prefer.

Will the plants be easy to buy?

I choose plants that are widely available from UK nurseries and give their full botanical names, so you can order exactly what's on the plan.

    Can I plant it myself?

Yes. The plan is designed to be planted by you or your gardener, with notes on preparing the ground and planting.

What's the difference between a planting plan and a garden design?

A planting plan covers what to plant and where, for a bed, border or the whole garden. A garden design also reshapes the layout: paths, patios, lawn and structure.
